Oral pathology is about diagnosing conditions that affect the mouth, jaw, and surrounding areas. Our team will start by reviewing your health history and carefully examining your mouth and jaw. We'll take this opportunity to check for signs and symptoms of oral cancer, including unusual growths, sores, or changes in tissue. If anything unusual is found, we may suggest additional tests like a biopsy or imaging to get a clearer picture. A biopsy involves removing a small tissue sample to send to a lab, where it will be examined to determine whether it's benign or malignant. Throughout the process, we'll make sure you understand each step so you feel confident and informed about your next steps and treatment options. We're here to support you and ensure your oral health is in good hands.

Oral pathology is essential for understanding your oral health, enabling early detection and intervention for various conditions. The benefits of this process include:

  • Early identification of serious issues like oral cancer, leading to more successful outcomes
  • Pinpointing abnormalities in the mouth, jaw, and surrounding areas for accurate treatment
  • Preventing worsening conditions by addressing them at the earliest stage
  • Developing a customized treatment plan based on detailed biopsy results
  • Providing reassurance by determining whether abnormal growths are benign or malignant

I went to Oral and Facial in Florence Al on Titan yesterday for a sinus lift and a bone graft.Erin my nurse she calmed my fear because I didn’t know what to expect, I honestly thought it was going to be terrible and I was going to be in dyer pain but Dr.Fredrick came in and he also calmed my fear came in like this was going to be easy and quick and boy was it they were both A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. I came out very numbed up but as the pain wore off I had little sore throat and little to no pain. Today is day 2 and little to no pain, now I do have some swelling which is to be expected but no nose bleeds, no congestion. Just a little soreness and swelling. I love that place, those people and so glad God chose them to the nurses and Dr’s for my journey to getting implants.

This is Teresa, not Paul. I don’t know why his name came up. I’m very scared in a dentist chair. The nurses made me feel comfortable and I was asleep before I saw the surgeon. Or that’s what I remember! My recovery has been easy. I ended up only having the tooth pulled, not cut out, so I was blessed!

What symptoms might suggest I need an oral pathology evaluation?

If you notice persistent pain, swelling, sores that don’t heal, or unusual lumps or discoloration in your mouth or jaw, it may be time to get evaluated. Shoals Oral & Facial Surgery encourages patients to schedule an oral pathology screening when any unexplained oral changes occur, as early assessment can be key to identifying potential issues.

How often should I be screened for oral pathology concerns?

While there’s no one-size-fits-all timeline, regular dental checkups are a good opportunity for basic screening. However, if you’re at higher risk, such as tobacco users, heavy alcohol consumers, or those with a family history of oral cancer, your provider may recommend more frequent monitoring or proactive evaluations.

What happens if my biopsy results show an abnormality?

If a biopsy reveals a concern, whether it’s a benign cyst or a more serious diagnosis, our team will walk you through the findings and your next steps. Shoals Oral & Facial Surgery will coordinate a personalized treatment plan that may include surgical removal, additional imaging, or ongoing monitoring to protect your long-term oral health.
